I enlisted in December 1962. Boot camp and IC ‘A’ school in San Diego, then submarine school in New London. Reported aboard Corporal, SS 346, the day they assassinated President Kennedy. Qualified following summer during Med trip. (Took awhile since that trip was so much fun.) 9 of us headed to nuclear power school for a year in Bainbridge, Maryland and Windsor Locks prototype. All of them got orders to boats – except me. They were looking for an IC2 for a destroyer (the Basilone, DD-824) in Newport that was headed to Vietnam with its squadron. An 8 month assignment with 7 months around the world cruise and 4 months off Vietnam, or up the Mekong River. Then off to 2 Polaris boats: the Alexander Hamilton, SSBN 617, and the Lewis and Clark, SSBN 644 before discharge in November, 1968. Then off to college at Kansas, my home state, where I met Suzann. We have been married for nearly 32 years. She is originally from Little Rock, where we live now. I work for the City of Little Rock and Suzann teaches in Rhetoric and Writing, and the IT Minor program at UALR.
